Announcements
1) VOICE appeal for behavioral health programs — Nancy Veldhuis asked us to come on Saturday morning and stand in support as a VOICE speaker testifies for Teen Behavioral Health through afterschool programs. Come between 8:15 and 9:30 am, on Saturday, Dec. 14. VOICE is asking the Arlington County Board to follow through on setting up these afterschool programs. Come to the board meeting room on the 3rd floor of the county office building, 2100 Clarendon Blvd, in Arlington. (see more details below)
2) Advent Day of Recollection, Saturday, Dec. 14 — Gloria Mog let us know that Fr. Ted Keating will again offer his wisdom at a guided Advent Day of Recollection on Saturday, Dec. 14, from 10 am to 2 pm at the Greenbelt Catholic Community. The topic is "Maintaining the peace of God in a world of chaos and violence." It will be in the room where Greenbelt has their Sunday liturgies: 25 Crescent Road, 2nd floor, Greenbelt, MD 20770. RSVP to Trudy Conrad if you’d like to go: [email protected]. Contact Gloria if you have any questions or would like to carpool. Bring a sandwich; some refreshments will be served.
3) Educate the Girls basket sale, next Sunday — Nancy also wanted us to know that Educate the Girls, which supports educational opportunities for girls in Uganda, will hold a basket and handicraft sale at Kenmore, after liturgy next Sunday (Dec. 15) This year the group have some new items for sale, including colorful tote bags, All proceeds go to providing the opportunity for a basic education through secondary school to girls in a rural village of Uganda who would otherwise go without an education. Donations to Educate The Girls are also cheerfully accepted. In addition, Nancy said the "Starv'n Artist," Chris Swanberg (Nancy's son), will return with his holiday sale of woodburn art pieces, to include nature scenes, Civil War motifs, Star Wars motifs, comic book characters etc.
4) Christmas Eve liturgy in Falls Church, 5 pm — Nova’s Christmas liturgy will be held on Dec. 24 at 5 pm. at the Center for Spiritual Enlightenment, 222 N. Washington St., in Falls Church. Please gather at 4:45. Light refreshments will be served afterwards. Parking is on Washington Court (off Washington St.) ONLY at the green and blue signs designated for public parking. You may also park in the Kaiser Permanente Garage across the street off of Park Ave. on the second level. Public parking is allowed after 5:00 but on Christmas Eve no one has had a problem parking there a little early.
5) Donations to Christ House — Joe Keyes suggested that Nova members consider making a donation to the Arlington diocesan Catholic Charities Parish Christmas Collection, which goes to support Christ House (which provides food aid for unhoused individuals and is located in Old Town Alexandria). Joe said he got the idea after reading an item in the Catholic Herald (you can find it online here: https://www.catholicherald.com/article/local/parish-collection-benefits-diocesan-catholic-charities/ ) Joe suggested sending a check to the diocese and make a note that you are a member of the Nova Catholic Community. Here’s the address for donations: Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Arlington, P.O. Box 1900, Merrifield, VA 22116-1900
6) Socks and Gloves for Christ House — As Nova has done for many, many years, please consider bringing warm socks or gloves next Sunday — wrapped and marked for men or women — to be distributed at the Monday night meal that Nova supports every December. Tim White said he would happily accept the gifts, which find grateful recipients among the Christ House clients.
7) Peace and Social Justice meeting moved — Meg Tuccillo told us that the Peace and Social Justice projects meeting has been moved from January to Sunday, Feb. 2, at Kenmore, after liturgy.
8) Food donations for AFAC — Finally, please don’t forget to bring food donations for the Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC) to liturgy each Sunday. Nova has supported AFAC for more than 3 decades; the need is not growing less — more than 4,000 families are coming for food assistance every week. Boxes of cold cereal are good; but you can also bring peanut butter, low-sodium canned beans or vegetables, canned tuna or other protein-rich items.
The presider and planner for next Sunday’s liturgy will be Fr. Charley Miller, OFM, and Gloria Mog. The scribe for announcements will be Cathy Goldschmidt, who (as usual) needs written copies of announcements made. — submitted by Phil and Alicia Cackley
