Save the Date: All Souls Service of Remembrance to honor the losses our community has experienced in the past few years. Saturday, November 2nd, 4:00 p.m. at the home of Joe and Sally Keyes in Arlington. Wine and Cheese gathering afterwards.
From the Peace and Social Justice Team: Bill and Peggy Meyer brought to Dianne their concern about their cleaning lady, whose son needed a security deposit and rent money immediately in order to return to UVa for fall semester. He is a good student in his senior year with a scholarship for tuition, internship experiences, and likely good prospects for a job after graduation. But he fell behind on his expenses after missing his spring semester for health reasons. Joe Formoso wrote a check to cover the $3,200 of immediate need, and the committee asked Joe to make arrangements to cover his rent through December, and to ask the student to investigate possible help through UVa for the future. Also, Meg will write a contract calling all of this a loan to be repaid after five years. If you would like to make a donation toward this student's needs, please contact us. Thank you.
The NOVA Book Discussion Group will meet after the liturgy on September 15. A light lunch will be provided, so please let Cathy Goldschmidt know before the Retreat if you plan to attend. The group will discuss The Kingdom, the Power, and the Glory by Tim Alberta.
VOICE will hold an important meeting Sunday Sept. 29, from 3:15 to 5:00 p.m. on the subject of mental health services in Virginia. Nancy Veldhuis urges as many Nova members to attend as possible to attend. The session will be held at Fairfax High School, 3501 Lions Run, Fairfax, Virginia. The focus of the session with local and regional officials is to highlight the community’s need for improved behavioral health centers. VOICE hopes that a large turnout of concerned citizens will convince elected officials to commit to funding better support systems and resources. To quote Nancy, “We need a sizeable turnout from Nova to do our part for this important campaign.”
Food donations are needed for AFAC. Don’t forget to bring boxes of cold cereal (and other food donations) to liturgy on Sunday. Nova has been connected with the Arlington Food Assistance Center for all of the non-profit's 35-year existence. AFAC is now serving more than 3,700 families every week. After Dianne’s recent plea for donations, you generously doubled your donations from more than 30 boxes each week to more than 60, but donations have again dropped off. Let’s redouble our efforts! Please remember to bring a box or two of cold cereal, or peanut butter, canned tuna, canned soup (in pop-top cans), plain pasta or canned beans next Sunday.
Next Sunday is the 24thd Sunday in Ordinary Time. The planners Fr. Tuck Grinnell and David Mog. Markie Harwood will be the Scribe.
