Four consecutive meetings of Catholic Higher Education leaders are taking place in Melbourne, Australia at the Australian Catholic University:

▪    July 6-7 General Assembly of the Association of Universities Entrusted to the Society of Jesus in Latin America [More info at AUSJAL website (in Spanish) http://www.ausjal.org/]

▪    July 8-10 “Expanding the Jesuit Higher Education Network: Collaborations for Social Justice.”  Presidents of Jesuit Higher Education institutions and the Directors of other Jesuit institutions from around the world. [More info at Melbourne 2015 microsite http://www.luc.edu/melbourne/]

▪    July 11-12 “Presidents’ Roundtable” as part of the 25th Anniversary celebration of the Australian Catholic University featuring themed discussions of international models of collaboration in curricula and research, networking opportunities with Australian and international universities, and opportunities for presentation of international mission related initiatives.

▪    July 13-17 25th General Assembly of the International Federation of Catholic Universities [More info at ACU website link or download brochure here]

Working with colleagues in different parts of the world, I have suggested that these meetings offer a wonderful opportunity for Catholic Higher Education globally to respond to Pope Francis’s new encyclical Laudato Si’.

Already more than 100 colleges and universities from more than 20 nations have signed onto a statement of commitment [available here].  Check the signatories at the bottom and see if your alma mater is listed.  Maybe you can help promote this!

After listening to the State of the Union address and several Republican responses, I also find myself depressed, angry, grieving at the hardness of heart our politics spews at us.

Through a full hour of claiming some successes and promoting “middle class economics,” President Obama could not [dared not?] once mention the poor of the nation or the world.

Just 2 hours before, PBS posted a news Bulletin:
“The 85 wealthiest people in the world
have more wealth than the poorest 3 billion 600 million”
[which is half the world’s population].

Not one mention from the president.

And the Republicans who spoke kept insisting that it’s tax breaks for the wealthy that will eventually be what helps the middle class.
